Annual Retired Members Outing – 14 April 2015
51 ASA retired members enjoy great hospitality at their Annual Retired Members Outing. This year included a tour of Aras an Uachtarain, with lunch in the Ashling Hotel, followed by a tour of the Glasnevin Museum. Many Thanks in particular to Prof Frank Crosby & Dr Dermot Ruane, for organising the Day.
ASA Honours its Oldest Member
Ned Sheehy, the oldest member of the ASA, was a special guest at out event for retired members held on 14 April 2015.
Ned, who will celebrate his 98th birthday on 6 June, was ASA President in 1968/69 and was a leading light in our association in the early decades following its establishment in 1942.
From Union Hall in Cork, Ned graduated with a BAgrSc and MAgrSc from UCD. He joined the Department of Agriculture in 1944 and rose rapidly through the ranks of inspector, senior inspector and deputy chief inspector before being appointed the Department’s chief inspector in 1973. He retired from the Department in 1982 on his 65th birthday.
Ned is a life-long member of the RDS and is a regular visitor to the RDS library and the members’ dining room.
Outside of agriculture, he is a rugby enthusiast and is a former president of the Blackrock Rugby Club in Dublin.
Ned was joined at the retired members’ event by his friend and former colleague in the Department, Dr Austin Mescal. Austin, who is 85, succeeded Ned as chief inspector in the Department. He is also a former president of the RDS.
