Members See Tillage Farming at its Best
Members who participated in our tillage tour to the farm of Larry and Ann O’Reilly, Ballyragget, Co Kilkenny on 30 April were treated to a feast of top technology and good business management. We are most grateful to Larry and Ann O’Reilly and their son James for their generosity in allowing us to visit their highly impressive tillage operation and for their hospitality. Thanks also to Teagasc adviser Dick O’Shea for his participation in the tour and Connolly’s Redmills & Comex McKinnon for sponsoring this event.

Tillage Farm-Profitable and Long term Sustainable under CAP
Larry and Ann O’Reilly farm 480ha of tillage. The visit offered an opportunity to see state-of-the-art technology, in a practical farm setting. Topics covered include:
- Five year rotation strategy,
- non-inversion cultivation combined with ploughing
- Fertiliser strategy and combined fertiliser placement,
- integrated pest management practices,
- comprehensive record keeping and
- excellent machinery and diesel management
- Exceptional Manpower management
The impact of GPS and auto steer on cost reduction will also be discussed as will issues on land leasing.
Full management details on crops of winter wheat, spring oats and oilseed rape crops will be on view at different sites.
