Professional Work Experience Scholarships Launched

We had a large attendance of students at the launch in UCD on Wednesday 5 November of the ASA/AIB 2015 Professional Work Experience (PWE) scholarships.

The ASA and AIB are again combining to provide four scholarships to support third year students in the UCD School of Agriculture and Food Science in undertaking the PWE element of their course overseas.

All third year students who plan to travel overseas in 2015 to undertake their PWE are eligible to apply. The four successful applicants will each receive a cheque of €1,000 to support the travel and other costs associated with their overseas trip.

A highlight of the launch was the presentations by the four winners of the 2014 PWE scholarships of their experiences overseas. Presentations were made by:

• Ruth Fennell, who worked on a tillage/suckler farm in Canada
• Michael O’Donnell, who worked with the Kerry Group in Wisconsin
• Martin O’Shea, who worked in a forestry research centre in California
• Ciara O’Donovan, who undertook her work experience on a dairy sheep farm and with a crop consultancy company in the UK.

2015 Applications
All third year students in the BAgrSc and the BSc (Food Science) programmes, who intend to undertake their work experience abroad, are eligible to apply. Full details of the application procedure, which includes a 1000 word essay on the proposed location and duration of the PWE and the relevance of the placement to the student’s programme, have been distributed to all eligible students.

The closing date for applications is Tuesday 18 November. All applicants will be interviewed during the week commencing Monday 24 November and the four scholarship winners will be announced during the week commencing Monday 1 December.

We wish to sincerely thank AIB for its generous sponsorship of this important ASA initiative for our undergraduates.
