Beef Nutrition Masterclass, Grange – Tuesday, 15th November

On Tuesday, 15th November the ASA hosted a Beef Nutrition Masterclass in the Grange Research Centre, Teagasc. This sold out event was attended by over 80 delegates.

Speakers included Dr. Alan Kelly, UCD who presented some of his current research on early life nutrition interventions to enhance productivity and profitability in beef cattle. Paul Mooney and Ann-Marie Crowley, Commercial Nutritionists with Trouw Nutrition presented on feeding strategies for finishing cattle and the complexities of mineral nutrition. Dr. Mark McGee, Research Officer from Grange gave an overview of ongoing work at the centre including a study on feeding by-products and the impact of various feeding formulations on animal performance.
The day finished with a tour of the research farm by Dr. Edward O’Riordan where the group heard directly from Teagasc Researchers. Dr. Bernadette Earley, Teagasc Research Officer – Animal Health and Welfare updated the group on her current study on stocking rates. Dr. Claire Fitzsimons gave an overview of her PhD on feeding efficiencies and Mervyn Parr presented results from a farm study on trace elements in beef cow herds in the country.

Today’s ASA beef masterclass discussed solutions to achieve greater efficiencies based on the latest beef scientific research. Agricultural science professionals who are up to date on the results of cutting edge research have a key role in helping beef farmers achieve better efficiency, profitability and sustainability.”
