Beef Tour – 18 October 2013
ASA Members Autumn Beef Tour
We had a big attendance of members for the ASA autumn beef tour and seminar which took place on 18 October at the ICBF beef progeny testing centre, Tully, Co Kildare. Members from many areas of the agri-food sector got valuable information on the G€N€ IR€LAND progeny test programme.
Stephen Conroy of ICBF led a tour of the facility where over 200 bulls and steers, the progeny of AI sires and proven bulls, are currently being tested for weight gain, carcass and eating quality traits, and health and disease. All animals are genotyped.
Members participated in a lively discussion on the role of genomics in lifting productivity and incomes in beef farming and in capitalising on opportunities in premium export markets. The seminar, which was moderated by ASA member John Shirley, was addressed by Dr Andrew Cromie, ICBF, Cormac Healy, Meat Industry Ireland and Gerry McNally, Dunbia.
Our tanks to ICBF for hosting this worthwhile member event and to Dunbia for its generous sponsorship.
