Programme

Thursday 18 June
 
  • Greenmount College research farm, Co Antrim – 170 cows on high input system; investment of £2.5m in new facilities.Visit farm of 
  • Pritchitts, Newtownards, Co Down – a Lakeland Dairies company, specialising in food service products; includes a state of the art, fully automated, global logistics centre.
  • Thomas Steele, Kircubbin, Ards Peninsula, Co Down; UK Dairy Farmer of the Year; 500 cows on 400 acres; average yield 10,000 litres.

Overnight in Premier Inn, Cathedral Quarter, Belfast

  • Dinner and stakeholder discussion forum in the Merchant Hotel, Belfast. Speakers:
    • George Ramsbottom, Dairy Specialist, Teagsasc
    • Ian McCluggage, Head of Business for Agricultural Development, CAFRE
    • Patrick O’Meara, Agri Advisor, AIB

Friday 19 June 

  • Thompsons Feed Mill, York Road, Belfast; the largest multi-species feed mill in Europe with an annual output of almost 0.5m tonnes.
  • Simon Best’s tillage farm, Poyntzpass, Newry, Co Down; over 1,000 acres of crops, including winter wheat, oats, oilseed rape and beans; contract with White’s Speedicook, Tandragee, Co Armagh, Ireland’s largest oat miller; move towards conservation crops, spreading of green waste and herbicide/fungicide decision making among the many interesting topics for discussion.
    15 IASIS CPD points available for this part of the tour.
  • Jonathon Carson’s 100 cow suckler herd in Downpatrick, Co Down. Jonathon entered organic system in 2006 and is achieving output levels and livestock performance which convertional farmers would envy. Limousin x Friesian Suckler cows, Charolais and Limousin Terminal sires with all progeny finished to beef, sold under organic symbol. The Carson Farm is a Northern Ireland Focus Farm.
