Salary & Grade:       Grade 5 with a starting salary of €42,163. The Scale for this Grade is €42,163 – €62,244. New Entrants to the Public Sector commence on the first point of the Scale


Job Purpose: The purpose of this role is to develop and deliver the communications strategy for Bord Bia’s engagement with Irish farmers and raise awareness of the invaluable contribution this relationship makes to increasing the value of Irish food and drink exports. The Senior Agri-Food Communications Executive will report to the Corporate Marketing and Communications Manager and draw on the assets of the wider Marketing Communications department where relevant.

Key Internal Relationships: Corporate Marketing and Communications Manager; the wider Marketing Communications team; Director Marketing; Meat, Dairy, Horticulture, Quality Assurance, Origin Green teams; overseas offices; CEO and Senior Leadership Team.

Key External Relationships: Media, with a specific focus on agriculture media outlets; media partners; farming organisations; communications and marketing agencies; content providers including copywriters, photographers, and videographers; Irish government departments and state agencies including the Department of Agriculture, Food and the Marine and where relevant Government Information Service (GIS). 

Key Accountabilities


  1. Develop and deliver Bord Bia’s ongoing farmer communications strategy
  2. Drive Bord Bia’s reputation and awareness with farmer and other key agri-food stakeholders
  3. Manage the farmer communications budget


Main Duties


  1. Manage the development and implementation of Bord Bia’s farmer communications strategy
  2. With the support and input of internal sector specialists, project managers and Bord Bia’s overseas offices; develop effective communications initiatives, impactful content and creative campaigns targeting Irish farmers across the calendar year
  3. Work with agri-media to develop and deliver effective editorial and marketing media campaigns that increase the visibility and awareness of the key aspects of the Bord Bia / farmer relationship
  4. Manage all communication for Bord Bia’s core agri-food events and engagements including, but not limited to, the National Ploughing Championships, Origin Green Farmer Awards (biannual), Meat Marketing Seminar, trade conferences, agri-food sponsorships, international trade visits and farm walks
  5. Act as Bord Bia’s main press office contact with agri-media at home and abroad
  6. Support the Corporate Marketing and Communications Manager with press office enquiries, team management and administration / reporting requests
  7. Support the Corporate Marketing and Communications Manager with the management of media visits to overseas markets or attendance at Bord Bia trade events and trade fairs
  8. Manage the internal and external resource requirements of the farmer communications strategy, and related work plans and budgets
  9. Support the office of the Chief Executive through the provision of agricultural event briefings, speech materials and media counsel where relevant


Person Specification




  •  Degree level qualification in relevant discipline e.g. Agriculture, Journalism, Economics
  • Membership of relevant professional bodies e.g. Agricultural Science Association, National Union of Journalists, Guild of Agricultural Journalists



  •  3 years’ experience in AgriFood communications and/or journalism
  • Experience of developing communications strategies and campaign planning
  • Experience developing and managing relationships with key stakeholders
  • Knowledge and understanding of how media and social media work, and how best to utilise each medium
  • Policy/Public Affairs exposure

Required Skills:

  •  Excellent written skills with experience of writing and editing for media, social media, websites, and video scripts
  • Strong business report writing and presentation skills
  • Ability to work to create engaging content that will resonate with farming stakeholders
  • Strong interpersonal and influencing skills with an ability to build and maintain good working relationships at all levels in an organisation
  • Excellent organisational skills, with the ability to prioritise and manage tasks and third party suppliers
  • Collaborative; operating to the highest professional standards
  • Excellent project management, planning and presentation skills
  • Ability to function in an advisory capacity
