Episode 3: Prof. Maurice Boland
In the third of the ASA ‘Experts in their Field’ monthly podcasts, ASA Council Member Tommy Boland chats with Prof. Maurice Boland.
Maurice is synonymous with education and research in the Agri-Food sector in Ireland having spent the majority of his career in the School of Agriculture and Food Science in UCD, prior to spending six years with Alltech.
Maurice is married to Geraldine and they have three daughters and eleven
grandchildren. He graduated from UCD in 1970 with a Bachelor’s Degree in Agricultural Science and also completed a Master’s Degree and PhD specialising in applied animal reproduction under the supervision of Prof. Ian Gordon in UCD. He spent periods of sabbatical leave at UCDavis, CSIRO Australia and Ag Research NZ. He was awarded a Doctor of Science degree (based on his published research) in 1984. He has an outstanding international research record in cattle embryo transfer and was elected
President of the American based International Embryo Transfer Society (IETS) in 1990. He was actively involved with a number of other international research societies and was on the editorial board of several peer reviewed scientific journals. He was an invited speaker at numerous scientific meetings worldwide.
Maurice lives near Kilteel in Co. Kildare, though he hails from North Wexford. Now retired Maurice’s main interests include set dancing, cycling, bridge and relaxing with his grandkids.
In this podcast, Maurice details his distinguished career and the tremendous achievements across a range of areas from his key involvement in the initial development of non-surgical embryo transfer in cattle, to his various leadership roles across the agriculture faculty and UCD where he was appointed UCD Vice President for Life Sciences in 2008. Maurice shares his experiences of leading teams through periods of disruption, the importance of team-work and surrounding yourself with good people and the necessity of taking responsibility and delivering on your commitments.
