In this episode past president Mary Delaney, speaks with Tom Tynan, former Member of Cabinet at European Commission.

Tom Tynan joined the European Commission in 2014 and served in the cabinet of European Commissioner for Agriculture and Rural Development, for the full five-year mandate. In December 2019 he became a Member of the Trade Commissioner’s Cabinet.

Prior to joining the European Commission, Tom worked across a range of agri-business and policy areas where he held a variety of senior management roles. He was Commercial Director for IAWS Agri-business and subsequently Chief Operating Officer of Welcon AS. He ran a successful milk procurement program in Northern Ireland for Leckpatrick Dairies. His experience spans commercial, strategy, operations and on-farm advisory, in addition to deep policy knowledge across agriculture, trade and research. He held posts on the Board of Teagasc (Ireland’s Agriculture & Food Development Authority), Agri-Aware and the Scientific Advisory Board of Alltech.

Tom hails from a dairy farming background in the south east of Ireland. He was educated at University College Dublin (UCD) and Harper Adams University College Shropshire. He was the UCD Alumni Award winner from the UCD School of Agriculture and Food Science in 2015.
